Sharing of Photos

I have been experimenting with different ways of sharing photos online using a variety of different online photo sharing sites, such as Flickr, Ringo, Get Jealous, FaceBook, Picasa, and Plaxo. But another way of sharing photos once they are on a site such as those is to embed the slide show code from one of those sites into your blog. So below (at the end of this entry) I have the code from a slide show that I have on my Picasa site to share some of my pictures from various trips that I have taken. The steps for doing this are:
- Create a photo album in Picasa
- Within the Picasa album there is a link on the left side of the Picasa album screen that says “Embed Slideshow” –> click on that link
- This opens a pop-up window. Click in the box that says “copy and paste this into your website” and copy the box contents.
- Go to your blog, create a new blog entry, click on the code view (so you are creating a blog entry using the html code view, rather than in the visual or wysiwyg view) –> paste the code that copied from Picasa.
- Save. Voila! When you view your blog, the slide show should be embedded in the blog entry.

I am currently using Picasa for my photos and slideshows. I was wondering about other photo sharing sites like Flickr. Do you have a preference? What things should be considered?

Thanks for a great question! I use Picasa as well after trying out a variety of the different free photo sharing sites. There are a number of factors to consider, but I’d say these are the ones that I have found to be most important:
– ease of accessing for end users (this is the most important, because if you have end users who aren’t tech savvy, then having them have to do anything beyond point and click isn’t going to work (e.g. some sites require you first to create an account before being able to view others’ photos)
– easy of uploading: Ideally you want to be able to upload photos just by locating them and putting them up, and not having to resize them first to dimensions acceptable to the site hosting service.
– number of photos/amount of storage: some services are free but limit considerably the number of photos you put up, and amount of storage you use for these.
– advertising: I don’t particularly care if there is advertising on the site along with my photos, but of course it’s ideal if there isn’t. I used to use Ringo, but then noticed that some of the ads that appeared below my pictures were not appropriate (I didn’t really want a link to “meet hotties tonight!” appearing along with my photos, especially when I was using the site to share photos of schools with my teacher education students!!).
– given that I already use Gmail along with a number of other Google tools, it is really convenient to have my photo sharing be packaged with this.
– option to be able to share photos publicly (with anyone) or privately (for close friends, relatives, or any other select group).
